Paul Baden

Paul creates unique and inspirational sculptures. He works exclusively with plywood a material that on the surface appears utilitarian, but hides an amazing beauty within its depths. Finding that hidden beauty is the challenge he loves.

He's a self taught carver and has found his own unique way of working with that material. He loves the journey of exploring new ways to create unusual and eye catching sculptures. He won the HSBC sculpture award in 2006 at the CPSA exhibition at the Banqueting House Whitehall.
He seeks to create a harmonious balance between strong powerful shapes and tactile sensuous curves. Each sculpture is as smooth as possible as an open invitation to stoke or caress the work.

Paul's work follows two main themes
• Maps
• The human body.
Paul has been a cartographic draftsman for over 20 years and has always been fascinated by the undulating landscape that surrounds us. When he first used plywood he was taken by the way the uniform layers mimic the contours found on maps. Therefore, what better material for a map maker to use in his sculptures?  He brings his experiences of maps into each of his sculptures. Each piece creates its own unique three dimensional landscapes that tempt the hand to explore it.
Please contact Paul to discuss the commissioning of a unique new sculpture

"So long, and thanks for all the fish"

After very many years of craft&design we've decided that we'd like to retire and so in 2 days we will close the craft&design website, including craft&design Online and the craft&design Selected Makers and Craft and Design Month websites. We've had a brilliant 35 years and would like to thank all our readers, advertisers, writers, contributors and website visitors for their support throughout that time. Our very best wishes to you all for the future - Angie and Paul.
