Pauline Townsend

Buxton Opera House - painting on silk by Pauline Townsend

Pauline Townsend had a career in advertising before taking the decision to go back to college to study art & design.  Once she discovered silk painting she was hooked and turned professional 16 years ago.

Pauline uses both iron fix silk paints and silk dyes in her work and only paints on pure silk. She enjoys painting flowers, stylised landscapes and buildings using the traditional technique of outlining the design with a resist medium before painting. Her work is characterised by vibrant colours and clean edges. She has recently introduced a humorous range of paintings with a holiday theme. Pauline’s original paintings are mounted and framed.

An early exponent of using the internet to promote her work, Pauline has an extensive website with an online shop and galleries of work.  She exhibits throughout the Peak District and has a permanent exhibition in Gallery in the Gardens within the Pavilion Gardens, Buxton in Derbyshire.  Her cards are sold in many retail outlets and through National Trust properties in the East Midlands.

Pauline is a member of the Guild of Silk Painters and also professional art & craft group Peak District Artisans.  She enjoys passing on her skills to the many students who attend her workshops, which are based at her studio in Buxton.
