  Selected Makers

Phil Brown

Based in a small workshop in Somerset, one of the most important elements to my work, for me and I hope my clients is that the items are one off pieces designed by me and truly made by hand. The inspiration has come from something specific whether the wood or something I have seen and I want the item to reflect this uniqueness.

My pieces range from large outdoor furniture to intimate cabinets, primarily in wood. For me wood is the material I love to work with, the look of it, the smell of it and the way tools engage with it.

I am inspired by the timber I source and the things I see around me. I spend time in the landscape of Somerset and love being along the coast but inspiration usually comes from the small scale such as stems, pebbles and leaves.

I sketch ideas and try to work as loosely as possible from these, allowing the design to evolve in response to the material in hand as I work. I always aim to make objects that celebrate a beautifully unique material, rich in character and distinctly from wood.

I work with hand tools, because they connect you to the wood and I find they are suited to the more organic, sculptural pieces that I make. Whatever the piece I am interested in creating pieces that are sculptural, engaging to look at and touch but at the same time I like my work to have a function.

Please get in touch if you would like any more information about the pieces currently available or if you would like to commission an item.

"So long, and thanks for all the fish"

After very many years of craft&design we've decided that we'd like to retire and so in 62 days we will close the craft&design website, including craft&design Online and the craft&design Selected Makers and Craft and Design Month websites. We've had a brilliant 35 years and would like to thank all our readers, advertisers, writers, contributors and website visitors for their support throughout that time. Our very best wishes to you all for the future - Angie and Paul.
