The inspiration for my work comes mainly from what I see around me in the Ironbridge Gorge, where I live, work and play (kayaking on the Severn!). There are trees everywhere- stacked up the sides of the gorge and along it as far as you can see.
I like to think of my work as in a certain English tradition- echoes of English landscape painting, Arts and Crafts pattern and honesty, while trying to create a contemporary, relevant, desirable product for today.
The technique I use is known as slip decorated Earthenware (a traditional English technique) meaning a liquid clay (slip) is used to decorate the unfired pot. I use a combination of sponging, brushing and “scratching” to produce my designs. This is then fired and clear glazed. Wax can also be used to resist the glaze from certain areas, as on my terracotta rim dishes. The plaques are unglazed high fired porcelain, mounted on either ceramic tile or solid oak.
