Robert Aley

The Wax Studio is an independent craft workshop where Robert Aley designs and makes fine quality candles and wax sculpture to his own clean, contemporary designs. Each creation is uniquely distinctive and genuinely hand crafted.

Robert Aley holds a masters’ degree in three dimensional design. His first interests centred on the use of design to enhance the emotional and physical quality of people’s lives. This led him to work with people with disabilities and poor communities in developing countries, often supporting small scale craft enterprises.

Inspired by the craft entrepreneurs he worked with, and fascinated by the qualities and potential of wax as a medium, he set up The Wax Studio in 2003. He is particularly interested in exploring the qualities of different waxes, and in stretching the boundaries of the material, challenging our assumptions of how a candle or wax product should look and behave.

The Wax Studio has grown steadily and has won awards for its products. It now enjoys a reputation for design creativity and high quality handmade products. Robert continues to support craftworkers in developing countries through his work as a trustee for Advantage Africa and through occasional consultancies. He is currently writing a book for the charity Practical Action on candlemaking for profit.

Robert develops his own techniques and specialised equipment to realise his ideas and undertakes private commissions and special orders.
Products can be purchased from The Wax Studio website and selected retailers and shows.
Robert is a member of Design Gap, The Gift Association and FSB.

"So long, and thanks for all the fish"

After very many years of craft&design we've decided that we'd like to retire and so in 1 day we will close the craft&design website, including craft&design Online and the craft&design Selected Makers and Craft and Design Month websites. We've had a brilliant 35 years and would like to thank all our readers, advertisers, writers, contributors and website visitors for their support throughout that time. Our very best wishes to you all for the future - Angie and Paul.
