I am a woodturner making bowls, vases, hollow forms and table lamps.
My initial training was in Metallurgy, later I became a metalwork and then a Craft, Design and Technology teacher.
My interest and passion for wood developed whilst living in the Bahamas as a teacher.
Living on a remote out island I began to make items from wood alongside windsurfing boards made from foam, glass-cloth and resin.
I have been woodturning since 1997; my initial interest was in making hollow forms, but this has broadened to include all aspects of woodturning and surface decoration.
I like to work creatively with wood in the green state, straight from the tree. Sometimes I create the piece in one go, but more often I rough turn, allow the wood to dry and then finish turn. I use mainly local wood for turning, sourcing suitable logs from various places; a large proportion comes from a local beach.
More recently I have been developing techniques to create latticework bowls and vases for which I have received a number of awards in national competitions. I am a member of the Somerset guild of Craftsmen and in 2010 was accepted on the register of professional turners.
