Rowena Park

Rowena Park trained at Brighton University where she followed a 3d design course in mixed media setting up her own workshop in 1982 when she graduated. Since then she has continuously sold to shops and galleries in many countries.

She works with clear acrylic which is shaped and bent using grinders, saw cuts and polishing grits to achieve the basic shapes , and transparent coloured lacquers combined with gold leaf which are applied to the back surfaces to create the vibrant and sumptuous effects, which are then "viewed" through the acrylic layer. The clear acrylic enhances the jewel like quality of the combination of lacquers and gold leaf by focusing the light into the acrylic and bouncing off from the coloured layer.

Constantly evolving new motifs and colourways, current inspiration has been drawn from the many walks taken in the South Downs using maps and becoming drawn to the contour lines which describe the landscape in 2 dimensions. The "Dizzy" range is directly inspired from the contours and combined with Rowena's particular choice of colour to create unique and distinctive jewellery.

"I have always thought that jewellery design is a dialogue that involves what the wearer wants to say about themselves as much as what the designer/maker is saying about the function of jewellery. I like to work with non precious materials so that the consideration is of the artistic merit not the intrinsic value of a piece.
My aim is to create wearable pieces of art within the confines of the field of jewellery."

"So long, and thanks for all the fish"

After very many years of craft&design we've decided that we'd like to retire and so in 7 days we will close the craft&design website, including craft&design Online and the craft&design Selected Makers and Craft and Design Month websites. We've had a brilliant 35 years and would like to thank all our readers, advertisers, writers, contributors and website visitors for their support throughout that time. Our very best wishes to you all for the future - Angie and Paul.
