  Selected Makers

Ruth Moore

I am a freelance jewellery artist and painter based in Sheffield and generally have a passion for many areas in art, design and craft.

Since studying Art and Design (BTEC National Diploma) my enthusiasm to experiment with different materials flourished, consequently I then went onto study a BA Honours degree in Metalwork and Jewellery. I now enjoy designing and making unique pieces of jewellery along side painting and other creative pastimes.

I am inspired greatly by natural form, particularly plants which I have been fascinated with from being very young. I enjoy manipulating the plant forms, changing the colours - usually clashing them and combining them with images of forms I have collected in my minds eye.

My colourful, imaginative and sometimes surreal painting style influences the jewellery I create. In my ongoing collection 'Natural Curiosities' I bring my paintings to life using different gauges of silver wire, silver art clay accents and various paints. With more recent work using oxidisation for an edgy look.

I sometimes display such pieces on the paintings as though they have emerged from them, allowing the pieces to be worn as well as admired on the wall, blurring painting with jewellery.

I believe jewellery should be created and admired like a piece of wearable art, and that the idea, originality and skill behind a piece is the true value.

The charm of my jewellery is that each piece is unusual and unique.

"So long, and thanks for all the fish"

After very many years of craft&design we've decided that we'd like to retire and so in 62 days we will close the craft&design website, including craft&design Online and the craft&design Selected Makers and Craft and Design Month websites. We've had a brilliant 35 years and would like to thank all our readers, advertisers, writers, contributors and website visitors for their support throughout that time. Our very best wishes to you all for the future - Angie and Paul.
