My name is Sara Brown and I started my company Sada in September 2003. I trained in fashion and textile design in London in the 1980s, going on to work as a knitwear designer in industry. Then followed a career in management for some of the UK's leading design retail companies.
On relocating to Yorkshire, I took some part- time courses, one of which was textile decoration. Since childhood I have always been passionate about colour and loved the "hands on" feel of working with dye on fabric, its totally addictive.
Contemporary Art has always had a strong influence on me. I use my research on art to produce ideas and sketches, which are then translated onto fabric. Many different elements are involved in each piece of work. Different types and weights of Silk and Cotton are by hand; dyed, painted and printed using various techniques.
I work on the background of each design initially, colour washing or distressing to give the appearance of old parchment. Graphic images are painted and outlined with pen. After this embroidery using beads, net, organza, braid, ribbon and voile can be added.
Sada produces 3 ranges; studio, wedding and home and will consider commissions on request.
I use the fabric produced predominately for scarves, but produce cushions and cards and have currently been commissioned to produce canvases for a gallery.
There is an eclectic flavour to my work, it appeals to individuals who want to make a statement.
