Sharper Millinery

My love of millinery was ignited in 2006 and continues to thrive as I design and create each hat or headpiece for individual clients. Processes including hand blocked bases, creating flower trims and dip dying to match colours making them the perfect accessory for a wedding or a day at the races. Famous clients at the races have included Cheska Hull (Made in Chelsea), Claire King (Emmerdale) and Gina Harding (channel 4 racing presenter).

Clients of Sharper Millinery have also won more best dressed and best hat competitions at ladies’ day at the races both nationally and internationally than any other UK based milliner (Wetherby, Singapore, Uttoxeter & Newmarket to name a few)

Bespoke hats and headpieces created by Sharper Millinery evolve through many different stages to create the perfect finished piece for each client. A hat can be created with sinamay, straw or fabric such as silk or velvet which is dyed to the perfect colour or shade if required. The crown and brim are ‘blocked’ separately; this involves pulling the fabric over a shape and pinning into place and stiffened. The crown and brim are stitched together; the brim is wired and covered on the edge by a binding, a lining added if necessary and any other embellishments required by the client such as feathers, flowers and jewels. All stitching, blocking and binding is done by hand making each hat totally unique and a piece of artwork for your head!

My first book ‘How to make Silk Flowers’ was published in 2015 and continues to sell well, a second book is currently being written.

"So long, and thanks for all the fish"

After very many years of craft&design we've decided that we'd like to retire and so in 85 days we will close the craft&design website, including craft&design Online and the craft&design Selected Makers and Craft and Design Month websites. We've had a brilliant 35 years and would like to thank all our readers, advertisers, writers, contributors and website visitors for their support throughout that time. Our very best wishes to you all for the future - Angie and Paul.
