Sally Weatherill

Sally Weatherill studied art history and creative writing at Brown University, Rhode Island, before pursuing a degree in textiles at the California College of the Arts, graduating with Highest Honours.

Thereafter she moved to London and set up a print studio, specializing in devore velvet.  Her collections of devore scarves were featured in many magazines including Country Homes and Interiors, Homes and Antiques and Draper’s Record, as well as in several books.  Sally sold her devore scarves through craft fairs – including The Chelsea Crafts Fair – and galleries.  She also received commissions for collections of scarves from the British Museum and Neiman Marcus.

Recently, after acquiring a 24-harness dobby loom, Sally has focussed on weaving, producing fabric for scarves, ties, cushions, handbags and wall pieces.

Sally’s hand woven range is distinctive in its use of rich colour and textural interest; her fascination with the fabric selvedge has led her to create ruffled scarves and irregularly pleated ones that are ‘nipped in’ at regular intervals.  She also uses felting techniques to create three-dimensional seersucker fabrics.  Often directly inspired by the yarns themselves, Sally’s work is the result of an exploration of yarn properties, a love of colour and much experimentation.

Sally has recently launched a jacquard woven range of work in which she continues to explore themes of pleating and ruffling, while adding new elements inspired by optical art.
