Samantha Donaldson

Samantha Donaldson specialises in hot and cold glass techniques. She graduated from De Montfort University in 2009 with a First Class BA Honours Degree in Design Crafts and then became an artist in residency at De Montfort, during her residency Samantha achieved her greatest ambition, earning a place at the Royal College of Art, London. Where she is currently studying her Masters Degree today.

Throughout her undergraduate studies, Samantha took the opportunity to explore a wide range of materials and processes but found herself continually drawn back into the glass workshop. This lead to her deep fascination with hot and cold working techniques, the beginning of her artistic exploration and commitment to this material.

Samantha developed a body of one-off sculptural free blown glass forms for her degree show, where she began to realise the potential of using glass in an expressive and imaginative way.

Samantha was initially inspired by the internal structures of naturally occurring geodes and the was in which the hidden, mysterious and often surprising stratified layers of colour are revealed. During her investigation she created a series of work influenced by the exploration of the 'vug', which is the internal space within a geode.

Experimenting with molten glass and capturing its fluid movement in a controlled manner helped Samantha clarify that she is inspired by the material itself.
Samantha become very interested in the use of cold work; carving the forms themselves through extensive cutting and polishing techniques. This is where her sculptural one-forms really take shape. Samantha’s aim is that the viewer will be absorbed into the internal movement of each unique piece.

"So long, and thanks for all the fish"

After very many years of craft&design we've decided that we'd like to retire and so in 30 days we will close the craft&design website, including craft&design Online and the craft&design Selected Makers and Craft and Design Month websites. We've had a brilliant 35 years and would like to thank all our readers, advertisers, writers, contributors and website visitors for their support throughout that time. Our very best wishes to you all for the future - Angie and Paul.
