My work is about developing groups of porcelain vessels, which echo utility. I use paper porcelain clay because of its strength and translucency, also I include stainless steel dressmaking pins into the form. The bucket shaped form allows the maximum amount of light to travel through the vessel whereas the conical shape lends itself to function and display. I enjoy the purity of the clay body when it has been high fired especially the colour and texture, this high temp also ensures maximum translucency.
By utilising these translucent qualities of porcelain, I create ambient lighting features, which include contemporary designs for table lamps, pendant shades and wall lights.
I am engaged with mark making, impressing fabric, wallpaper and found objects into a flat sheet before giving the clay a container form. Considering how the vessel is formed is another important factor, like clothes seams with stitching, pins, buttons and zips. I draw a lot of my inspiration from interior design magazines, materials and haberdashery outlets, extracting elements of both fabric patterns and design.
