Sarah Nicol

work by Sarah Nicol

I have a BA from Somerset college in Surface Pattern (1996) and an MA from Bath Spa in textiles (2008). I decorate functional ceramics and embroider textiles with little houses and boats set in naïve landscapes.

I use coloured slips on the clay to create a fabric like feel that echoes the appliqué embroidery with wool and linen of the textile pieces.

The inspiration began on a fabulous train journey up the west coast of America when I drew Oregon. Since then I have been inspired by journeys taken throughout the world. African mud huts, an American barn, a Devonshire cottage, a French gatehouse, have become doorstops or fragrant herb houses.

Pillows, book covers or the never ending circumference of a bowl depict landscapes that set together make panoramic views.
