Stevan Hartung’s one off pieces of furniture in native hardwoods are unique in that many use the unusual figure in a particular piece of timber as their starting point, thereby making them impossible to reproduce. This sensitivity towards the materials characterises Stevan’s work which emphasises a high standard of craftsmanship and a strong attention to detail. His work is guided by the belief that craftsmanship should be inseparable from good design.
Stevan originally trained as a product designer, but his interest in furniture making led him to an apprenticeship in Berlin in 1994. Here he first encountered the ideas of cabinet maker James Krenov, whose passion and approach have had a strong influence on Stevan. On his return to Ireland in 1995 he set up his own workshop and began making furniture to commission.
Stevan lived and worked in Scotland for five years during which time he traveled widely in Asia, visiting local wood workshops wherever possible. The simplicity and coherency of Oriental crafts has had a great influence on his approach to design. Since then he has received a number of large scale commissions for Buddhist temples across Europe.
The scale of Stevan’s work ranges from residential commissions to large scale installations.
