I am a designer-maker working in kiln-formed glass. I graduated as a mature student in Glass from the University of Wolverhampton in 1998 and have been working professionally in my own studio full time since establishing my business in January 2002.
I started my own business (Rupert Scott Ltd) in February 2002, producing handmade glass tiles which have won awards from The Tile Association for their innovative design and high quality. This business continues to grow successfully, whilst I am now also able to concentrate more on producing art pieces and bespoke commissions for wall hangings for private and public sector clients.
I specialise in kiln-fusing and slumping, with the use of glass enamels, and have developed a unique style with these materials. My work includes ornamental pieces such as platters, wall hangings and freestanding panels, and I take inspiration for much of my work from the surrounding coastal colours and textures. One of my particular ‘signature’ pieces are my sculptural shell-form bowls. Each one is a unique shape, as I make by hand a fresh, individual mould for each one.
I like to be constantly producing fresh work, with each piece being a progression from the last as I explore and challenge the technical limits of glass as a medium.
I work with a sense of humour and fun, and an open mind. I love having no constraints, and being free to be spontaneous without having to conform to trends.
In these days of mass production it is my desire to produce handcrafted pieces of superb quality, in complete contrast. Each item is made to be treasured, and to be capable of being displayed to be admired on its own merits. After firing, the edges of my multi-layered pieces are painstakingly cold-processed - using a series of 5 diamond discs, they are ground and polished to create a beautiful finish.
