Sue Burne lives in Somerset. She is a Craft Member of the Guild of Glass Engravers and of the Somerset Guild of Craftsmen. Her work may be seen in galleries in Somerton, Martock and Burnham on Sea.Much of her work is commissioned and some is now in the USA as well as in the UK
Sue is inspired by the beautiful countryside around her home and by her love of the sea. Flora and fauna both real and imaginary feature in the designs she creates. There are examples of the wildlife of the Somerset Levels and the West Somerset coast but also mythical beasts such as dragons and the Phoenix.
Sue engraves using either a hand drill or flexi drive with diamond or stone burrs. Her recent work has mostly been intaglio engraving, which gives a 3D effect when viewed through the glass but which is a difficult technique to master.
Glass engraving requires fine attention to detail and a steady hand, which are also needed for the pyrography and calligraphy for which Sue is also known. She is a member of the IAPA (International Association of Pyrographic Artists) and the UKPyros and also of the Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society. Her pyrography is now all over the world and her calligraphy has been used in work such as church memorials, a Book of Remembrance and a calligraphic map for the Millennium.
