  Selected Makers

Sue Burne

I live and work in Somerset.

The Guild of Glass Engravers has assessed my glass engraving and I have been awarded an Associate Fellowship. In 2014 I was a Finalist in Craft & Design magazine’s selected maker competition.

As an elected Craft Member of the Guild of Somerset Craftsmen, my work can be seen in the Home Gallery of the Somerset Guild of Craftsmen in Wells, Somerset. I also exhibit in a number of other galleries.

Much of my work is commissioned and some is now abroad as well as in the UK. I am inspired by the beautiful countryside around my home and by my love of the sea. Flora and fauna both real and imaginary feature in the designs I create. There are examples of the wildlife of the Somerset Levels and the West Somerset coast but also mythical beasts such as dragons and the Phoenix.

I engrave using either a hand drill or flexi drive with diamond or stone burrs. My work is mostly intaglio engraving, which gives a 3D effect when viewed through the glass.

My work has been exhibited in many glass exhibitions at national and international level with the Guild of Glass Engravers and The Somerset Guild of Craftsmen. I have exhibited three times at The Red House Cone in Stourbridge, at the National Glass Centre in Sunderland, the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge and several times at the gallery in Johansfors in Sweden. In 2014 and 2015 I was a guest artist in an exhibition in Stoke Mandeville in Buckinghamshire.

I have produced large scale glass works for church commissions in Devon, Somerset and Bedfordshire and doors for a restored Grade 1 listed house in Devon.

I enjoy working at a large scale as well as doing smaller work. While much of my work is of natural subjects often drawn from life, I like to use my imagination to create more abstract work too. I have used the human figure in my work both realistically and as semi abstract forms.

"So long, and thanks for all the fish"

After very many years of craft&design we've decided that we'd like to retire and so in 29 days we will close the craft&design website, including craft&design Online and the craft&design Selected Makers and Craft and Design Month websites. We've had a brilliant 35 years and would like to thank all our readers, advertisers, writers, contributors and website visitors for their support throughout that time. Our very best wishes to you all for the future - Angie and Paul.
