Sue Stone

Sue Stone is a UK based textile artist who studied Fashion at St Martins School of Art and then Embroidery at Goldsmiths College in London. She is current Chair and exhibiting member of the 62 Group of Textile Artists, and a Member of the Society of Designer Craftsmen.

Sue’s work is mainly figurative and combines images to make a narrative. She uses hand stitch to build up texture and pattern, free machine drawing and mixed media as a means of mark making. Her skills have a lot in common with drawing but she sees in stitch and promotes the discipline in its own right.

She enjoys making analogies, compositions which connect time, place, circumstance, the ‘out of place’ linking the past with the present and often alluding to the passing of time.

Her inspiration comes from anywhere and everywhere : snippets of news heard on the radio, her own memories, street art and especially the family photo album.

She spent 26 years as a clothing designer and has an affinity with cloth which can be seen in the richly textured clothing of her subjects.

Sue’s work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions both nationally and internationally and is held in public collections in the UK and and private collections worldwide. She also works to commission and gives talks. Works range from larger scale hangings and stretched canvases to small studies.

"So long, and thanks for all the fish"

After very many years of craft&design we've decided that we'd like to retire and so in 150 days we will close the craft&design website, including craft&design Online and the craft&design Selected Makers and Craft and Design Month websites. We've had a brilliant 35 years and would like to thank all our readers, advertisers, writers, contributors and website visitors for their support throughout that time. Our very best wishes to you all for the future - Angie and Paul.
