After working in practical countryside management for some 15 years, and then dabbling in archaeology, I picked up a book about basket making and was instantly 'hooked'. I taught myself initially and over the years improved my skills with a number of short courses.
I live and work in Shropshire where I now weave with English willow, some of which I grow myself. I produce a wide range of strong, attractive, functional baskets for domestic and garden use. My baskets are made with proven traditional weaves and techniques (mainly English), whilst incorporating a strong design element to give a contemporary feel. My range of products includes baskets for dogs to logs, trugs to shopping trolleys, and waste to wet washing. I also work increasingly to commission, carry out repairs and give talks and demonstrations. I'm a member of the Basketmakers' Association and the Shropshire Guild of Contemporary Craft.
Basket making is one of the most environmentally-sound processes and I still obtain enormous satisfaction from weaving a good, solid basket, knowing the material comes from a sustainable source and creating in a matter of hours, a functional piece which will last a great number of years and which is ultimately bio-degradable.
