Tom Kealy

Tom’s enthusiasm and passion for wood started as a boy working alongside foresters in the New Forest. He loved the sense of timelessness, of space, and of being close to nature. His respect and awe of trees has stayed with him throughout his working life.

Tom has designed and made contemporary furniture for over 30 yrs. His love of trees and forests is reflected in the strength of his designs, with their simplicity of form and elegance, the quality of his workmanship and his attention to detail. Tom works to commission and each piece is made exclusively by him, using mainly solid hardwoods but occasionally including other materials such as willow, veneer, glass and metal.

Recently Tom has begun a collaboration with clockmaker Julius Schoonhoven, designing and making a range of contemporary longcase, (grandfather), clocks. Julius designs and makes each individual time piece movement by hand.

Tom also runs weekly furniture making classes from his workshop in Somerset, and is a regular tutor at West Dean College in Sussex and at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Maine, USA. You can find more information about his classes and courses on his website at

As one of the first students at Parnham College in 1977, Tom trained under Robert Ingham. Since then, in addition to running his own workshop in Somerset, he also worked for ten years as senior craftsman in the John Makepeace workshops.

"So long, and thanks for all the fish"

After very many years of craft&design we've decided that we'd like to retire and so in 2 days we will close the craft&design website, including craft&design Online and the craft&design Selected Makers and Craft and Design Month websites. We've had a brilliant 35 years and would like to thank all our readers, advertisers, writers, contributors and website visitors for their support throughout that time. Our very best wishes to you all for the future - Angie and Paul.
