Adrian Stapleton, artist Blacksmith

"By Hammer and Hand, all Arts do Stand"
This, the motto of the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths, could have been written for be Adrian, for he is continually delighted by the exquisite possibilities of iron, copper and brass as they meet the fire and the hammer.

"The term 'metal work' belies the true nature of blacksmithing," he says, "metals are both a colour palette and block of the finest marble to me: they are materials waiting for artistic interpretation".
He's in good company with this approach. It was Hector Gumaird, inspired by the fluid forms of Art Nouveau, who, when told that it wasn't possible to work such shapes into iron, stone, glass and wood, did just that. As a result, he left the world the archetypal arches at the entrances to the Paris Metro.

Adrian is a Journeyman member of the Company of Blacksmiths.
He was trained at the National School of Blacksmithing, where he experimented with all manner of techniques materials, emulating the approach of masters like Gumaird and just like the great masters, his fluid, curving touch can be seen in all his pieces. They are not just objects, they are an extension of him: the happy, thoughtful, loving and hard-working man that he is.

"My role is to use is creativity and imagination to create beautifully crafted and skilfully made items, which I and my customers, can love and enjoy."

"So long, and thanks for all the fish"

After very many years of craft&design we've decided that we'd like to retire and so in 7 days we will close the craft&design website, including craft&design Online and the craft&design Selected Makers and Craft and Design Month websites. We've had a brilliant 35 years and would like to thank all our readers, advertisers, writers, contributors and website visitors for their support throughout that time. Our very best wishes to you all for the future - Angie and Paul.
