Ulli Kaiser

Ulli Kaiser was born in Austria and studied Textile Art and Art Education (emphasis in painting) at the “Mozarteum” Salzburg, gaining the degree “Mag. Art.” with honours. When living in Hong Kong in the early 90s she taught Art and was involved in bookbinding, Asian jewellery and textile techniques. Here in England, she continued learning new crafts like upholstery, felting, mosaics, beading and jewellery making.

She taught herself the old technique of bead crochet with the intention of using it with unusual materials too, such as coloured wood, shells, antique facetted cut glass or tiny gemstones. In recent years silversmithing has developed into a strong part of her jewellery, it opened new doors to combine contrasts not only in colour and technique but also in shape.

All her jewellery is unique, they are one-off pieces. “I particularly enjoy commissions and adapting my work to the ideas and wishes of its future wearer. If the right size of beads and colours are chosen it can look stunning and accentuate and highlight someone’s features, be it a bold large beaded choker or an elegantly understating crocheted lariat.”

She is a member of the Sussex Guild of Craftsmen and sells her work through jewellery shows and galleries, and from her studio in Surrey.

"So long, and thanks for all the fish"

After very many years of craft&design we've decided that we'd like to retire and so in 65 days we will close the craft&design website, including craft&design Online and the craft&design Selected Makers and Craft and Design Month websites. We've had a brilliant 35 years and would like to thank all our readers, advertisers, writers, contributors and website visitors for their support throughout that time. Our very best wishes to you all for the future - Angie and Paul.
