Ulrika Jarl is a Brighton based designer-maker specialising in the creation of handcrafted lighting and homewares. Her products are made using bone china. Influences come largely from patterns in nature. The detailed work captures structural elements and richness of form. The work is as functional as it is artistic, as visual as it is tactile. Jarl creates domestic lighting, but also takes commissions for bespoke installations. She recently completed commissions for three different London restaurant. She has exhibited around the world, picked up by international furniture retailers and been extensively featured in a range of trade publications and UK press.
Swedish born Jarl explores her love of natural forms and structures throughout her work as a designer. The pieces are unusual and stand out as sculptural objects in their own right; the light adds another element to them. The forms are often turned on the lathe and then hand-carved, representing but not imitating natural forms.
The award-winning CEL light is inspired by macro-photography of the 'Owl butterflies' eggs. To the naked eye they just look round and smooth, however magnified you can tell that they have ridges across the form.
The piece is hand-carved, and a 7-piece plaster mould is made to completely hide the seam lines along the ridges of the form. The final light is slip cast in bone china; a material particularly unforgiving when it comes to hiding imperfections. However, because of the many pieces of the mould those otherwise highly visible lines disappear.
The lights are fired once in an electric kiln using the energy provider Good Energy that uses 100% renewable energy sources.
