Ingrid Philips

iGlass specialises in contemporary hand blown glass, and is run by glass artist Ingrid Phillips, who designs and makes all the glassware.

Ingrid Phillips graduated from Edinburgh College of Art with a Masters Degree in Design. Following training in the techniques of glass blowing in Scandinavia and the United States, she established her own workshop in Edinburgh with the help of a grant awarded by the Scottish Arts Council. Focusing on mainly commission based work, iGlass has also completed some major Architectural and Lighting Commissions.

All work is hand blown, using the natural fluid qualities of the molten glass to manipulate and exaggerate forms. Although often working in clear glass to illuminate the natural qualities of glass, colour is introduced as a reflection to the colours within nature. Cold working techniques are often applied as a second stage to a vessel, to explore spatial qualities, or to enhance a play with light within the glass walls or surface of the glass.

Exploration of the vessel form, and functionality are of interest, often in resulting in a vessel that could be considered as much non-functional, as functional. Ideas and inspiration come directly from nature and science, as well as reflection and experience.

"So long, and thanks for all the fish"

After very many years of craft&design we've decided that we'd like to retire and so in 62 days we will close the craft&design website, including craft&design Online and the craft&design Selected Makers and Craft and Design Month websites. We've had a brilliant 35 years and would like to thank all our readers, advertisers, writers, contributors and website visitors for their support throughout that time. Our very best wishes to you all for the future - Angie and Paul.
