  Selected Makers

Sarah Mcdade

Sarah has been hand making her original ceramic figures and heads for over 25 years. Her character heads are made from stoneware clay decorated with oxides and ceramic colours, which enhance their individuality.

A recent development of a new range of pieces found her experimenting with darker bodied clays, using simpler shapes, which are often coiled or pinched. This is a very tactile and direct way of building, which she finds very satisfying. A single colour is used to highlight the incised details.

Sarah has also ventured into producing garden sculpture, which was prompted by a large commission, and by the making of outdoor sculptures as part of a large school project . Also she has been invited to make a large sculpture and a series of plaques as part of the Pendle Witch Sculpture Trail in Lancashire in 2012.

Sarah runs workshops from her studio, and is also involved in educational projects.

"So long, and thanks for all the fish"

After very many years of craft&design we've decided that we'd like to retire and so in 37 days we will close the craft&design website, including craft&design Online and the craft&design Selected Makers and Craft and Design Month websites. We've had a brilliant 35 years and would like to thank all our readers, advertisers, writers, contributors and website visitors for their support throughout that time. Our very best wishes to you all for the future - Angie and Paul.
