Stuart Akroyd

Stuart Akroyd loves working with glass and has a never ending enthusiasm for creating beautiful hand blown objects. Stuart has always found inspiration from nature; his use of vibrant colours and rhythmic patterns echo the flora and fauna of the ocean. His most recent design projects are wall mounted sculptures reflecting the appearance of deep sea creatures.
Stuart has been making glass for over 25 years and is recognized nationally and internationally as an accomplished designer/maker, sought after for commissions and collections; both public and private. Stuart started his glass making career during a B.A. Honours Degree in Three Dimensional Design (Glass) at Sunderland Polytechnic, graduating in 1988. He progressed on to further study at the International Glass Centre, Brierley Hill, in the West Midlands where he specialised in glass blowing and cold cutting techniques.
After a short while working as head maker at a studio in the Lake District Stuart returned to Sunderland in 1991 and started his own business, whilst also teaching part ¬time at the University in the Glass Department. In 2000 he moved the business to a new site in Nottingham and expanded to include a new hot workshop, which has allowed Stuart to develop professionally. His adaptations of traditional Venetian techniques have expanded the physical possibilities of how the glass can be worked.
Stuart makes several ranges of production glass based on natural forms, and a dislike of symmetry. This theme continues into his one-¬off work where hot forms are twisted and stretched, then cold carved and polished creating vessels reminiscent of the flora and fauna of the ocean.
In 1999 the New Glass Magazine selected one of Stuart's one-off forms in their review of the 100 best pieces of glass made in the world that year.
Recent events in 2011 and 12 include:
