work by Toby Howes

Back in 1990 I graduated from Kings College London with a degree in ecology and went on to spend 13 years working with various organisations studying and lessening the impact that man has on the environment.

What fascinated me was how the smallest detail could have so much impact beyond the immediately visible, and this fascination permeates my work now.
At first glance each piece will appear simple, with clean elegant lines, but underneath it can be intricate in its fabrication, often revealing an ingenious and practical function.

All of my materials are sourced from Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) approved local timber yards, and my furniture is made from only the finest woods using traditional cabinet-making techniques.
I am happy to work on personal pieces by private commission as well as creating speculative designs for shows and exhibitions.
I have received awards for my both my craftsmanship and my design and my furniture has been featured in various publications. I can be found in Bespoke, the source book of furniture designer makers, idFX, Furniture and Cabinet Making Magazine, Focus Lifestyle Magazine and The Good Woodworking Magazine.
